The North Carolina Cooperative Extension – Transylvania County Center is excited to participate in the 2021 Extension Summer Internship Program! North Carolina State Extension offers this program to students enrolled at a 4-year university who are also studying a field related to Extension. The program allows students to get hands-on experience in every aspect of Extension: agriculture, food and nutrition, and 4-H youth development. As one of 26 counties across the State of North Carolina participating in the program, Transylvania County is hosting Duncan McSorley as this summer’s intern.

Duncan is a sophomore at NC State University studying Crop and Soil Sciences with a concentration in agronomy. Being from the Raleigh area originally, he is thrilled to be spending the summer with the County Extension Service, getting to know the area and community, as well as learning about the many different aspects of the agriculture industry going on here in Transylvania County and Western North Carolina.

Although the goal of the Extension Summer Internship Program is to provide students with experience in and understanding of all aspects of Extension, Duncan is focusing some of his time here working with local organic producers at Clem’s Organic Gardens and Gaia Herbs. He is also working on a project with the Plant Sciences Initiative at NC State University, creating educational and informational resources for developing technologies in plant disease diagnosis. The Internship Program runs for ten weeks from mid-May through the end of July.

“I consider myself lucky to be able to spend my summer working in such an agriculturally diverse County as Transylvania. I’ve already learned so much from being able to see and be involved in all of the many different ways Extension is serving this community,” said Duncan. “My degree is focused in traditional row crop production, but being the intern here in Transylvania County has allowed me to gain experience in livestock and horticultural production as well as in youth education, master gardener programming, and more. I have already had tremendously valuable learning and life experiences this summer that I will carry with me the rest of my time at NC State Universtiy and into the future.”

“Here in Transylvania County we have a wide variety of ag businesses, landowners, and other organizations that request our assistance,” said Transylvania County Extension Director Bart Renner. “We need to be able to assist our farmers with questions concerning crops such as corn, soybeans, sod, cattle, fisheries, vegetables, medicinal herbs, etc. using both organic and conventional farming techniques. In addition, we assist our homeowners, golf course owners, and other private landowners with landscaping questions. A career in Cooperative Extension means being able to understand large bodies of research-based information to inform people on ‘best management practices.’ We have a huge variety of experiences to offer here in Transylvania County, and we’re happy to be able to provide this educational opportunity to a great intern with a bright future.” Man in field Man carrying bucket in field Man looking at camera
