Bryce Lane helping George Place with a video

Extension IT appreciates all you are doing to use video in your educational programs! We also have a concern, in that we have noticed a lot of videos being posted without edited captions. Adding captions to your online videos is an important part of the process of getting videos online. Captions are required by university policy and state and federal laws.

Rest assured, generating captions for your videos can be accomplished in many different ways and EIT is here to help you.

Generate Captions from a Transcript

If you have a transcript, you can use it to generate your captions. The best way to do this is to upload the transcript to YouTube and allow YouTube to set the timings. EIT can help you do this if you use our NC State Extension YouTube channel.

Use Auto-Captions

Many content delivery systems like YouTube and Facebook will automatically caption your videos. Unfortunately, auto-captions are not sufficient. They are often inaccurate and lack punctuation. You can, however, edit these automatically generated captions. You do this by downloading the auto-caption file and then making corrections to the file. You can then upload the corrected file and attach it to your video. For more information on using YouTube for captioning view Closed-captions and Subtitles on YouTube from EIT’s Video Production Tips and Resources.

Use a Service to Generate Captions

You can also send your video to a captioning service. They will return a caption file for a fee. We normally use a system that charges $1.25 per minute and returns your results in about 24 hours. Although the result is usually very good, you will still need to review the caption file and make any necessary corrections to the captions.

Funds Available for Captioning

Extension IT has limited funds available to cover the costs of captioning Extension video content. These funds will be used to caption educational content following these guidelines.

  • The video must be hosted on the NC State Extension YouTube channel
  • The video must be less than 5 minutes long
  • The video must be properly branded with NC State Extension or N.C. Cooperative Extension
  • Videos should be submitted using https://go.ncsu.edu/ExtensionVideoUpload
  • Content owners are required to review caption files for accuracy

We are prioritizing short YouTube videos, but we will also assist with captioning of recordings of longer educational training and workshop sessions. We may not be able to provide funds in all cases. Please also submit these videos and requests through https://go.ncsu.edu/ExtensionVideoUpload

We will not be able to pay for captioning meetings or other gatherings, but we can assist you with the captioning process. We will need a project-phase number so that we can assign the charges to the appropriate account for meeting recordings.
